Job Description Summary: Under the supervision of the Academic Dean of the STEM Division (or Dean who oversees Science, Engineering, or Mathematics), the Director of MESA is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive student life program for the college, including but not limited to the various grants and support systems for students in STEM. The Director of MESA provides a vision and implements plans for student development, leadership, and curricular excellence; creates a coordinated program of activities and events to meet the needs of the current and future diverse student population. The Director of MESA also performs a variety of professional, administrative, and programmatic work in support of assigned programs, including serving as a liaison to, coordinating with, and providing high level administrative support and staff assistance to district staff, boards, committees, and outside agencies and institutions. This position is a fully grant funded position.
• Assume program management responsibility for the services and activities of a comprehensive support program for Ohlone College including but not limited to, serving as
the MESA Director for the state categorical program and providing leadership and
coordination of activities that promote short and long-term student success.
• Develop and implement program goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; recommend and
administer policies, procedures and services.
• Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and
procedures; recommend appropriate service and staffing levels.
• Plan, direct, coordinate and review the work plan for assigned staff; assign work activities,
projects, and programs; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems.
• Participate in the selection, training, motivation, and evaluation of assigned personnel;
provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
• Oversee and participate in the development and administration of the program budgets;
participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and/or supplies; ensure that program expenditures and cost estimates are adequately documented and monitored throughout the program area; review and approve program expenditures; and implement adjustments.
• Serve as the liaison for the assigned program and coordinate assigned program activities with other divisions, departments and outside agencies.
• Serve as staff on a variety of committees; prepare and present staff reports and other
necessary correspondence both for the College and District, but also for external granting
• Provide leadership and advisement to faculty in the supported areas.
• Advise key personnel in the development of semester calendars of campus activities and
events, and assist in the overall implementation of the activities as needed.
• Provide leadership in the creation of clubs and organizations associated with the
programmatic areas to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
• Advise and monitor the development and spending of a yearly budget for associated grants
and general funds, and communicates problems or areas of concern to the Dean of STEM.
• Attend and advise Division meetings, faculty coordinator meetings, student meetings and
other meetings as needed.
• Coordinate and monitor data collection such as FTES generation through supervised tutoring in the programmatic areas served.
• Supervise student activities, maintaining order and promoting responsible behavior as the
students interact with each other in a safe and collegial environment.
• Coordinate various special events including student recognition dinners, awards ceremonies, and all related components.
• Recruit students from campus and high schools for the MESA program, track success of
outreach efforts and provide strategic planning for growth and improvement in outreach.
• Establish and maintain communication with local business and industry council to
opportunities for students such as internships, job shadowing, field trips, and exposure to the industry environment.
• Provide leadership to student leaders and staff to develop workshops for students on such
topics as leadership development, conflict resolution, time management, goal setting,
problem solving, mentoring, etc.; to create a community of learners supporting the diversity of our students.
• Conduct regular assessment surveys of student interests in activities and campus programs
related to the area in an effort to improve services and community building.
• Facilitate and implement paperwork generated by the programs in a timely manner, including but not limited to program review.
• Work with the grants office to identify and apply for additional federal, state, and private
dollars that support the MESA programs and services.
• Collaborate with counseling staff that supports the MESA program and the STEM division.
• Keep the supervisor of record informed about progress on implementation of the workplan, achievement of objectives and metrics, and submission of reports.
• Engage with a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of faculty, staff, and students with physical and learning disabilities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: KNOWLEDGE OF:

Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a STEM field;
One year experience working with student academic services aimed at improving student success for students majoring in a STEM field;
Three-year work experience in education, industry or other profession involving work with postsecondary students in the STEM fields;
Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests;
Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
