Under the direction of the Vice President of Instruction, the incumbent plans, organizes and directs assigned academic division operations, activities, departments, and programs; coordinates and directs communications, information, resources, and personnel to meet the instructional needs of the assigned division and enhance the educational effectiveness of division departments, programs and functions; supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned faculty and classified personnel.
The Dean assigned to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Division will become conversant and contribute as a thought leader in the curriculum, programs, instructional methods, community partnerships, and student success in her/his division. S/he will support, Career Education programs, degree and transfer programs, and will advance innovations, including oversight of grants and special initiatives, in these disciplines and fields of study. The dean will guide participation by these departments in cross-institutional efforts such as the Student Equity and Achievement program, Guided Pathways, contract education, dual enrollment, faculty advising, and course/service area/institutional learning outcomes assessment. The dean will facilitate interdepartmental communication and collaboration with the other departments in instruction and in student services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Coordinate and direct communications, information, resources, and personnel to meet the academic needs of the College and enhance the educational effectiveness of assigned departments, programs, and functions; establish and maintain related timelines and priorities; assure related activities comply with established College, State and federal standards, requirements, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Provide leadership in the development and meaningful assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) and service area outcomes (SAOs) that lead to improvements in student learning and services.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned faculty and classified personnel; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions; coordinates subordinate work assignments and review work to assure compliance with established standards, requirements and procedures; observe faculty progress and performance in the classroom and/or online.
- Serve as the College administrator for Guided Pathways (GP) and collaborate regularly with faculty, classified professionals, and administrators across the College to oversee Guided Pathways budgets, program planning, professional development, design teams, annual scale of adoption planning, participation in California Guided Pathways Project cohorts, and student outreach and in-reach related to GP endeavors.
- Oversee processes and procedures for dual enrollment at the College collaborating with administrators, classified professionals, and faculty in academic and student services departments, as well as with local school districts, charters schools, and other community partners.
- Direct the development and implementation of programs, services, plans, strategies, processes, systems, projects, courses, goals, and objectives; coordinate and schedule classes, programs, services, and other academic activities as directed; assure proper and timely resolution of student, staff, faculty, administrative, department, program and related issues, complaints, and conflicts.
- Monitor and analyze assigned operations, activities, departments, and programs to determine educational and financial effectiveness and operational efficiency; receive and respond to administrative, faculty, staff and public input concerning division academic needs; direct the development and implementation of standards, programs, policies, and procedures to enhance educational quality and financial and operational efficiency and effectiveness.
- Assist faculty with developing and maintaining curriculum standards, enhancing class enrollment, and meeting the educational needs and goals of current and future students; coordinate activities and staff development functions to enhance College faculty understanding of curriculum standards and requirements, instructional strategies and related matters.
- Provide consistent, effective, efficient, and collaborative enrollment management of the disciplines assigned to the division, working regularly with classified professionals, faculty, and administrators within the Division and across the College. Participate in all aspects of Strategic Enrollment Management at the College including discipline planning, scheduling, program development and collaborating with College colleagues on outreach, student support services, budgeting, data review and analysis, and strategic planning in managing the enrollments of the College and the assigned programs.

- Provide consultation and technical expertise to faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and others concerning assigned departments, programs, services, operations, and activities; respond to inquiries, resolve issues and conflicts, and provide detailed and technical information concerning related standards, requirements, practices, schedules, strategies, plans, goals, objectives, laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinate division-level communications, programs, services, activities and information between administrators, faculty, department chairs, personnel, outside organizations, students, the public and various local, State, and federal agencies; direct the preparation and distribution of correspondence and marketing and informational materials as assigned.
- Request adequate resources and personnel to meet the needs of assigned departments and programs; direct related procurement and purchasing functions; initiate personnel transactions such as hiring activities as appropriate; coordinate and direct activities to assure proper facilities usage and access; assure proper maintenance of department and program facilities as directed.
- Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budget for assigned academic division operations, activities, departments, and programs; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations; research, obtain and maintain grants and other funding sources as required; prepare related proposals and documents.
- Direct and participate in the preparation and maintenance of a variety of records, reports and files related to departments, programs, services, personnel, students, courses, budgets, financial activity and assigned duties; assure mandated reports are submitted to appropriate funding entity, local, State or federal agency according to established timelines.
- Maintain and employ current knowledge of educational trends, innovations and practices, and local, State, and federal programs, laws, codes, regulations, and pending legislature related to assigned departments, programs, and activities; modify programs, instructional and student support activities, policies, and procedures to meet State and federal requirements as needed.
- Translate the College to the community and the community to the College by assisting in the development of strategies and activities that build stronger ties for the division with the College of Alameda service area.
- Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, assigned software and SMART classroom technologies.
- Represent the College locally, regionally, and statewide at conferences, seminars and special events as assigned; coordinate, attend and conduct various meetings; present materials and information concerning assigned departments, programs, and functions. Travel to off-campus locations for meetings, occasionally outside the normal working hours.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Possession of Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- One year of formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s assignment.
- Knowledge and proficiency in the operation and use of personal computers utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and database management software programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), including the internet.
- Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.
- Three or more years of college-level teaching experience, preferably at the lower division level.
- Previous experience in developing academic programs, curriculum, and grants.
- Knowledge of state and federal laws, such as Title 5 and Education Code, as well as policies, programs, regulations and services related to student recruitment, admissions, enrollment, retention, financial aid, matriculation, and records management.
- Skill in budget development, maintenance, and reporting related to general fund, grants, and other externally funded resources.
- Four (4) years of comprehensive and increasingly responsible management experience in instruction, or a related field.
- Skill in oral and written communication, including public speaking and complex reports.
- Skill in training, directing, supervising and evaluating the work of others.
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software and databases and technology related to student and other educational services.
- Commitment to and experience with Participatory Governance processes.
- Effective organizational, communication and public relations skills.
- Demonstrated passion for student-centered education and support
